BONSOIR | TOP TIPS
We spoke to Kim Milich, a Success & Wellbeing Life Coach who has provided her top tips on having a stress-free Christmas so that you can focus on the important things.
With the festive season on it's way you may be feeling overwhelmed by all the things still left to do. Rather than savoring quality moments with friends and family, you are multi-tasking to the max and by the time Christmas comes, exhausted from the stress of it all! With an ethos based on wellbeing and inner-calm, we want to make the season a time to switch off and enjoy, creating happy memories, without the stress that comes with it.
1. Manage your expectations
Setting realistic expectations can really help prevent the feeling of disappointment.
2. Set clear boundaries
Christmas time can be a busy time for many. If it’s too much for you and making you feel stressed at the thought, consider what’s the right balance for you. Be honest and open to others involved. You may consider rescheduling some plans. Spend time with those company you enjoy and leave you feeling good!
3. Make time for you
At such a busy time of year it’s very easy to be rushing around like a headless chicken. Look after yourself by setting time (yes scheduling time because when we don’t plan it, it often does not happen!) for you. It may be time to just sit and read a magazine/book with a hot drink or to relax in a cosy bubble bath. When you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed it’s very helpful to ask yourself one simple question: “What do I need right now?”. Listen to what you need as often it’s the simple things like taking a short break or an early night which can make all the difference!
4. Stop and breathe
Pay attention to how your body is feeling and if you feel lots of tension, stop and take a few deep slow breaths. It only takes a few minutes and really helps you feel calmer. Listening to meditation can also be very helpful in slowing the active mind and giving the mind and body time to relax and recharge. There are lots of different free apps with a great selection for both those new to meditation and those who have been listening for some time. For example: Insight Timer which is free! I like to see ‘Meditation’ as a mental fitness and part of my life.
5. Writing down your thoughts
This is another very powerful way to release any internal tension/stress and very therapeutic. My clients are often surprised how much they get down on paper. It’s great because all the thoughts were building up in your head and writing them down helps you feel lighter and happier. If you are a more visual person or enjoy art you may prefer to draw illustrations or pictures which represent how you’re feeling instead.
